When the laser is focused on to make a cut or engrave, what is the ideal spot size?

There are a couple of reasons that the focus spot should be as small as possible.  

First, the higher the energy density, that is energy per area, the better the laser will be able to cut through the material in general.  A small focus spot also means less material is damaged (wasted) in the process of cutting.

Secondly, for engraving, a smaller focus spot means a higher resolution engraving.
